About the series “bs/fd”
I studied printmaking at the Royal College of Art, specialising in etching. I have become interested in the unpredictability and randomness of the process. I have worked with traditional western methods and combined them with Japanese art techniques from my background, such as Shiborizome dyeing or Kintsugi mending. In this way, I explore the various possibilities of my original print.
For my "1000 times U-turn drawing" (part of my Drawing Series), I created different shapes/designs using a single unbroken line based on a diagram. While drawing the line, I imagine that I am binding a string around a metal plate. Sometimes I use drawings when I make a plate, and sometimes not. The action of drawing is more important than the result and inspires my imagination.
I think that a print reflects not only an image of the plate but also transfers a physical phenomenon- what happens on a plate during corrosion and the act of printing. This idea seems to me to mirror the fact that our lives are full of signs of impermanence.
Through my work, I realise that infinite relationships bound together create existence itself.
